Critical facts and information on hearing aids, including digital aids

If you suffer from some degree of deafness, your ability to hear everything you want to hear can create a world of frustration.  Being at a party and finding it virtually impossible to hear the conversation taking place right beside you can bring some people to tears.

Our goal is to provide you with some critical information on hearing aids, hearing loss and the different types of technology on the market today to help you.  There are two categories of hearing devices available and they are digital hearing aids , analog hearing aids and other hearing types of hearing aids..  The severity of your hearing loss as well as your budget may be key factors in your selection of either digital hearing aids or analog hearing aids.

Let’s take a moment to explain the difference between these two types of hearing aids.  Conventional or traditional hearing aids are designed with a certain frequency response which is determined from your audiogram which was conducted by your audiologist.  After your hearing test is done, your audiologist will work with the hearing aid manufacturer to install the proper settings for your hearing impairment.

There are some adjustments available, but with this type of hearing aid, all sounds including speech and noise is amplified in the same way.  These are the least expensive when compared to digital hearing aids.  So if you are looking for a good, affordable hearing aid, this may be the type for you.

Digital hearing aids are programmable hearing aids and offer all the features of analog hearing aids but they use digitized sound process to convert sound waves to digital signals. The computer chip in the hearing aid analyzes the sound signal from the environment, determines if it is speech or noise and then proceeds to modify it to provide a clear, amplified, distortion free signal to the ear.

These hearing aids are most often self adjusting.  Digital processing offers more flexibility than analog processing when it comes to programming the hearing device.  Digital technology is the most expensive technology on the market however it offers more extensive programmability, better fitting, manages loudness more effectively, offers more precise control of acoustic feedback including whistling and reduces noise better.

Before you choose between analog hearing aids or digital hearing aids, you need to understand about your hearing loss, whether you have hearing loss in both or one ear as well as the hearing environment you are in.  For people with hearing loss in both ears, binaural hearing aids are most often recommended.  Most people will experience significantly better hearing when binaural hearing aids are worn when they have hearing loss in both ears.

Once you have seen your audiologist and the extent of your hearing loss is clearly understood, you can select from a number of the best hearing aids by manufacturers who offer both digital hearing aids as well as other types of hearing aids.  These include Siemens, Phonak, Starkey, Beltone, Widex, Oticon, Rexton, Sonic Innovations and GN Resound.  You can also choose the style of hearing aid that best fits your lifestyle including in the canal, completely in the canal or behind the ear heaing aids.

BTE or behind the ear hearing aids tend to be larger and more visible than in the ear hearing aids but they can often offer superior performance.  Because of their size, BTE hearing aids have longer battery life and more programmable features.  The the behind the ear style are also exclusively recommended for child hearing aids.  This is because of their larger size which makes them harder to loose.  They are also more robust than in the ear styles which is a great feature for children.

When if comes to finding the best hearing aids, you find excellent information online or you can speak to your audiologist who will be able to recommend a brand and style that is right for you.  They will also be able to help you compare hearing aids by style and features offered.
